UPPER COLUMBIA RIVER SPRING-RUN CHINOOK ESU

ESA LISTING STATUS:  Listed as endangered on Mar. 24, 1999; endangered status reaffirmed on June 28, 2005NOAA Fisheries issued results of a five-year review on Aug. 15, 2011 (PDF 176KB), and concluded that this species should remain listed as endangered.

DESCRIPTION:  The ESU includes all naturally spawned populations of spring Chinook salmon in all river reaches accessible to spring Chinook salmon in Columbia River tributaries upstream of Rock Island Dam and downstream of Chief Joseph Dam in Washington, as well as six artificial propagation programs: the Twisp River, Chewuch River, Methow Composite, Winthrop NFH, Chiwawa River, and White River spring-run Chinook hatchery programs.

CRITICAL HABITAT STATUS: A final designation was published on Sept. 2, 2005 (PDF 9.7MB), with an effective date of Jan. 2, 2006.

PROTECTIVE REGULATIONS:  The take prohibitions of section 9 of the Endangered Species Act that apply to this ESU were published on June 28, 2005.
