UPPER COLUMBIA RIVER STEELHEAD DPS
THREATENED


DPS STATUS AND DESCRIPTION:   Listed as an endangered species on Aug. 18, 1997; status upgraded to threatened on Jan. 5, 2006; reinstated to endangered status per U.S. District Court decision in June 2007; status upgraded to threatened per U.S. District Court order in June 2009. The DPS includes all naturally spawned anadromous O. mykiss (steelhead) populations below natural and man-made impassable barriers in streams in the Columbia River Basin upstream from the Yakima River, Washington, to the U.S.-Canada border, as well six artificial propagation programs: the Wenatchee River, Wells Hatchery (in the Methow and Okanogan Rivers), Winthrop NFH, Omak Creek, and the Ringold steelhead hatchery programs.

CRITICAL HABITAT STATUS:  A final designation was published on Sept. 2, 2005 (PDF 9.7MB), with an effective date of Jan. 2, 2006.

PROTECTIVE REGULATIONS:  Final revised protective regulations were issued for this DPS on Feb. 1, 2006.
