The Central Puget Sound (CPS) habitat branch is located in Lacey/Olympia. The CPS branch is one of three branches that covers western Washington: the CPS area includes four counties in the Puget Sound area: King, Kitsap, Jefferson, and Clallam. There are 11 Native American Tribes with which CPS staff routinely coordinate. The CPS area includes four Congressional Districts.
The main work of the CPS branch is consultations under the Endangered Species Act and Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, on projects proposed by federal agencies in these four counties. Key work areas for CPS staff include the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma; U.S. Navy actions at Bremerton and Bangor; the Olympic National Forest and Park; and Elwha River restoration. Another branch, the North Puget Sound branch, covers project consultations around Lake Washington.
CPS staff are also involved in several regional and statewide conservation efforts, and supporting Puget Sound salmon recovery and local groups' development of conservation plans.
