Survival of Juvenile & Adult Salmon & Steelhead through the Federal Columbia River Power System

The Federal Columbia River Power System (FCRPS) is managed to provide safe and effective passage for juvenile fish migrating to the ocean, and for adults returning to their home streams to spawn. These passage actions support protection and recovery efforts primarily for seven salmon and steelhead populations in the interior Columbia and Snake Rivers listed under the Endangered Species Act.

These diagrams and definitions provide an overview of the primary ways we measure juvenile and adult survival.

Adult-Survival

Adult conversion rate:  measures the minimum survival of known-origin adult fish that have passed Bonneville Dam to the last upstream dam they pass before they spawn. This number is adjusted by an estimate of in-river harvest rates and "natural" straying rates.

Adult conversion rates data

Smolt-to-adult returns: measures the ratio of juvenile fish traveling out to the ocean to the number of adults counted at the last upstream dam they pass before spawning. This number is influenced by survival in the estuary and the ocean.

Juvenile-Survival

Juvenile in-river survival: measures the direct survival rate of juveniles that migrate through the river. For Snake River species, it is measured from the beginning of Lower Granite reservoir to below Bonneville Dam. In-river survival is influenced by dam operations, river flows and temperatures, and predation by birds and other fish.

Juvenile inriver survival data

Juvenile system survival: measures the total survival of juveniles that migrate in-river and those that are transported to below Bonneville Dam.

Juvenile dam passage: measures the percentage of juveniles that survive passage through a dam (from the upstream face of the dam through the tailrace). This is also called concrete survival. For most recent results, see the FCRPS Action Agencies BiOp Implementation Progress Report.
